The Identification process:
The following is an overview. More specific information can be found in the AIG Parent Guide.
I. Nomination
1. Wake County administers the CogAT to all 3rd grade students. Students who attain a CogAT composite or subtest score at or above the 85th percentile will be eligibile to take the IOWA. Students who score at the 92nd percentile on either the CogAT or IOWA will be considered for nomination to the School Based Committee for Gifted Education.
2. Nominations may be initated by written nomination from a parent or teacher within the nomination window. Information is compiled from the formal and informal indicators of potential giftedness and is considered by the School Based Committee for Gifted Education. The SBCGE will determine whether the student needs to be referred for further evaluation or not. Parents will be notified of the committee's decision.
II. Referral, Evaluation, and Committee Review
1. Students are administered the CogAT and the ITBS during established testing windows (Fall and Spring).
2. Students may receive additional individual assessments.
3. Parents and teachers complete an observation checklist that provides information about the student's classroom behaviors, academic performance, interests, and motivation.
III. Determination of the Need for Differentiated Services
Once the evaluation process is complete, the data is recorded on an Individual Student Profile (ISP) and reviewed by the SBCGE. The decision regarding a student's need for differentiated services is based on the information collected by the SBCGE and recorded on the ISP.
IV. Annual Review
The SBCGE conducts a yearly review to determine the appropriateness of the current level of services. Decisions are made to maintain, increase, or decrease a student's level of service based upon this review. Students remain eligible for gifted service as long as they maintain a gifted level of performance.

K-3 NurturingIdentified students in K-3rd grade receive services as outlined in their Individualized Differentated Educated Plan (IDEP). The AIG teacher will consult with the classroom teacher regarding differientiated curriculum and instruction.
Third Grade Explorers The 3rd Grade Explorers Model provides an opportunity for the AIG teacher to collaborate with 3rd grade teachers and to provide a variety of in-class experiences. Students who demonstrate high performance will participate in small group enrichment activities in reading/language arts and/or mathematics with the AIG teacher. |
4th-5th Grade ServicesIdentified 4th and 5th grade students receive differentiated curriculum and instruction in reading/language arts and/or mathematics within the general education setting.
Services vary depending upon a student's level of service. Moderate--Students with a moderate need for differentiation receive services in the regular education classroom. Strong/Very Strong--Students with a Strong or Very Strong need for differentiation receive services in the regular education classroom and with the AIG teacher for a minimum of 45 minutes per identified area, per week. |
Third Grade Explorers Information:
Unit 1 begins Oct. 2 with a rotation of 3 whole group lessons. Reading will be the first subject covered.
CogAt testing will be the week of Oct. 15. |
