Silverstein and Dahl Author Study and analysis
a 9 week unit in 2 weeks!
Last year, students voted at the end of the year to learn about Roald Dahl and Shel Silverstein as their final unit for 5th Grade AIG. The original intention was to have the students read a novel from each author and compare their writing styles, themes, and character development. However, due to the crazy weather this winter, our 3rd Quarter Reading Unit lasted a little longer than expected. So, in order to at least touch on these authors and their amazing work, we are going to focus on several of each authors' poems. We will be using the SOAPStone Method of Poetry analysis to delve deeper into the poems, and we will then compare the authors using our analysis notes. I will be exposing students to annotating their reading, so they will be prepared for the in-depth annotation expectations they will have in Middle School ELA. Students will not have any outside work this unit as I do not know exactly when I will be able to see them. We will be flexible with testing, review schedules, and end of the year activities.
